Last week --October 31 - November 6, 2010-- Waleed Al Huseini, a 26 year old blogger and an activist, was arrested in the West Bank city of Qalqilya by the authorities there for his atheist activism. His friends stopped hearing from him last week, then several posts made on Arabic forum site posted by users said that he was arrested. On Sunday, November 7, a news sources --Maan News Agency-- confirmed the news by contacting the ...authorities there who confirmed it. This is how it came from Maan News Agency (Arabic): http://maannews.net/arb/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=331497 Along to his blog: http://noor-alaqel.blogspot.com/ He also created several Pages on Facebook criticizing religions and promoting atheism. Among those Pages was the 'Allah' Page who he created to show that there is nothing miraculous about the Quran by publishing similar writings of the Quran verses, which created a lot of anger in Muslim communities. His Facebook profile and most of the pages he created on Facebook do no longer exist. The 2nd Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly states that: “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, RELIGION, political or OTHER OPINION, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.” Criticizing religions is pretty much allowed in countries with Muslim majority; people publically criticize Christianity and Judaism in mosques, published books, national and pan-Arab TV stations, and even in public schools. It's criticizing of Islam that is only not allowed. Allowing such action is not only double standard, but a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also could make a dangerous precedent that may open the door for further persecution, than already is, for irreligious and other religious minorities in societies with major Muslim population.
